Holy Crap the SDCC Ready Player One trailer has Freddy Krueger in it! Ah What A Rush.
The Ready Player One San Diego Comic Con trailer gave us a look at the movie’s pop culture filled virtual world. I love the book and feel it is responsible for much of the push into VR that is going on. It is a must read for any 80's/90's pop culture nerd and is full of references from Joust to Voltron. One thing I don't remember from the book is Freddy Kruger, yet there he is in the new trailer. I do hope this leads into VR nightmares. It also has band Rush playing in the trailer. Is this some weird reference to VR as a drug?
Ready Player One takes place in the year 2044 where reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines--puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them.
But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win--and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.
Ready Player One stars Tye Sheridan (X-Men: Apocalypse) as Wade Watts, Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl), Simon Pegg (Star Trek, Mission: Impossible), T.J. Miller (Silicon Valley), Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies), and Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). The movie’s script was written by Cline, Zak Penn (The Incredible Hulk, The Avengers), and Eric Eason (A Better Life). The film is directed by Steven "I made this fucking industry" Spielberg.
