Looks like the original Star Trek bridge will be included in the delayed again but still anticipated VR game Star Trek: Bridge Crew

Today, Ubisoft ® announced that the bridge of the legendary U.S.S. Enterprise from Star Trek: The Original Series will be playable in Star Trek™: Bridge Crew, the new virtual reality game where players explore space as a member of Starfleet. Under license by CBS Consumer Products, Star Trek: Bridge Crew will be available on PlayStation®VR, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. In addition to the announcement of the original series bridge aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, the new launch date on all platforms will be May 30 th, 2017.

Developed by Red Storm Entertainment, a Ubisoft Studio, Star Trek fans will be able to live out their Star Trek dreams as a member of the bridge crew aboard the famed U.S.S. Enterprise and the U.S.S. Aegis, a brand new ship created for Star Trek: Bridge Crew. Playable co-operatively with a crew of up to four, or solo playing as the Captain, players will be immersed into the Star Trek universe as they command a Starfleet vessel and complete missions that will determine the fate of their ship and crew.  The original U.S.S. Enterprise bridge will be playable in the Ongoing Voyages mode, which generates randomised missions for countless hours of solo and co-op adventure.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew marks the most recent project in virtual reality for Ubisoft, which believes in the strong potential of VR to redefine social gaming with a unique sense of reality. Ubisoft recently released the games Werewolves Within™ and Eagle Flight™, and announced a VR partnership with the film company SpectreVision.

Formula E and Virtually Live partner for VR highlight real in anticipation of the third season of the racing series.

According to the Virtually Live blog, the free app includes 20 minutes of Formula E ePrix content and focuses on the battle between racers Lucas Di Grassi & Sebastien Buemi in the fight for first place in the Championship. Users can virtually experience the Long Beach, Berlin and London ePrixs from the perspective of their driver of choice, or a variety of positions around the tracks. The app serves as a preview for the upcoming live experience, to be brought to fans during season 3.

The experience is available now for HTC Vive on the Steam Store and Viveport.

Samsung announces Samsung Creators program to help VR / 360 content growth.

Today Samsung Electronics America, Inc. launched Samsung Creators, a new initiative that empowers storytellers, partnering with them to generate content across a variety of audiences and channels to show everyday creators what’s possible with Samsung VR technology.

“We want to bring the power of VR technology directly to the people,” said Samsung Electronics America’s Chief Marketing Officer Marc Mathieu. “To help creators learn and perfect the art of VR storytelling, we’ve built an entire VR ecosystem that pushes beyond the frame and empowers them to develop unforgettable, immersive stories, and inspires us all to do the same.”

At VidCon—and, beyond—Samsung Creators will provide seminars and classes, putting VR capabilities in the hands of filmmakers and influencers, further accelerating this new medium. Leading into VidCon, Samsung Creators is working with Casey Neistat to spotlight emerging creators from YouTube and push the creative boundaries of 360 video storytelling. This special curation of content will premiere at VidCon.

Oriku, Inc. has announced its inaugural virtual reality music visualization experience, for the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. ­­ vrAMP, available on Steam Early Access and coming to the Oculus Store. Motes of light and dust particles surround and move through you as they float, swirl, and react to the music. vrAMP listens to any program or web browser and can be used with the Steam in ­game overlay web browser. Netflix Hack Day takes us back to the bygone era of video rental stores.

You are now entering a dimension, a dimension of nostalgia and tomfoolery, you are now entering THE NETFLIX ZONE. As part of Bi-annual Netflix Hack Day, this ode to the bygone era of video rental stores was created for HTC VIVE. You can grab VHS tape version of Netflix shows watch them on screens on the walls and ceiling of the video store homage. 

Though it is unlikely this will be available to the public I do think this is a great idea and I can see someone developing this in some form. Imagine having our pirate video collection in a personally curated store with Quentin Tarantino as the store clerk telling you that you know nothing about movies. Oh and by Pirate Video, I do mean legally purchased versions of Pirates Of the Caribbean. I do miss the charm and randomness of video stores and this really put a smile on my face. 

Now all I can think of is that my life is not going to be complete until I rent a virtual copy of Johnny Mnemonic from a virtual 90's underground video store and then watch it in VR.

Cerevrum brings Neurogaming to GearVR & XTECH 2016. They also brought really cute stickers!

Cerevrum Inc. is a software development group with a focus on progressive social and educational VR projects. CEO Natasha Floksy would say that means to make people happy as well as smarter. CatsAndVR had the chance to learn more about Cerevrum the company as well as Cerevrum the game during XTECH 2016. 

Cerevrum the game left an interesting impression on me. The first thing I noticed was the calming voice that prepared me for my Cerevrum experience. From the voice tutorial I got an understanding of the simple memory training and matching that make up the game mechanics. One thing to understand is simple does not equate to easy or ineffective in this case. The simple concepts get rather complex in application as the game progresses and as I learned from CAO Olga Peshé is that Cerevrum has been tested on college level students to gauge the effectiveness as a brain training tool. 

The second thing that really took me back with Cerevrum the game is the beautiful fluid art style. The use of colors as well as scene transitions make for a very flowing and non aggressive style of gaming. That style created a place where I was comfortable learning and wanted to continue the process of brain training. The themes of alien worlds and space exploration almost bring to mind a child like view of space travel and in turn bring that wide eyed amazement to a VR educational experience.  CEO Natasha Floksy views herself as an artist first then a CEO and this shows in the game. The advances in VR has made the possibility of using the technology in unique ways. Virtual reality is a game-changer for brain training. That feeling of presence you can achieve in VR allows you to challenge cognitive abilities in a way that more closely matches the real world. Pressing buttons on a smartphone screen only goes so far, but natural inputs like head rotation and hand tracking allow players to interact intuitively with VR environments.

I do think Cerevrum the game is fascinating and I am interested in what the company can create in VR for people who suffer from learning disabilities. Cerevrum INC already has an innovative VR tool to help with public speaking available for GearVR.   http://speechcentervr.com/

That one time VR made me cry. Imago is an amazing work of VR art.

This past weekend I got the chance to work with some great people in creating 360° film projects at an event called VR Weekend. At the end of the event our group had the opportunity to hear some insights from Chuck, Tsung-Han Lee, one of the visionary minds behind Imago.

Imago left a real impression on me, this may be due to the fact of having a family member with a disability but also due to the techniques Chuck and his team, Project Hypnos, used to create the feeling of isolation and freedom in a VR space. Actually building a camera around a physical representation of a disabled person really put me in a space of sadness at points.

There is a moment in this film that I actually shed a tear. Imago is not just a good VR experience, it is a true work of art that should be showcased as such as well as be accessible to many. I look forward to seeing how Project Hypnos will help to define cinema as well as real emotional experiences in VR. Imago was honored by the Vision VR/AR awards and has been accepted into Siggraph 2016.

Imago is virtual reality short film produced by Project Hypnos, an interdisciplinary team of graduate students at the Carnegie Mellon's Entertainment Technology center. This project was developed to explore questions of film language, story structure and production techniques for 360 degree film.

MoMA NY to present immersive VR Storytelling.

Slithering Screens is a special selection of original cinematic works that premiered in the Sundance Film Festival’s New Frontier program over the past decade. Presented at MoMA on the occasion of the program’s 10th year, these works hack the cinema space itself by presenting stories that move from the silver screen onto the stage and into the hands, pockets, and homes of the audience. Featuring works by Lynette Wallworth, Yung Jake, Nao Bustamante, Miwa Matreyek, and the filmmaker/creative technologist duo James George and Jonathan Minard, Slithering Screens is an energetic mix of cinema-inspired performance, interactive documentary, and immersive media storytelling.

In addition to live experiences at MoMA, more than 10 virtual reality works such as Collisions will be made available on the Sundance VR app for Google Cardboard from April 25 to May 5. Limited artist-edition Cardboard VR goggles designed by Yung Jake will be given away to Slithering Screens attendees each night.

The first artist selected for the Sundance Institute New Frontier | Jaunt VR Residency Program is Sundance Institute New Frontier alumnus Lynette Wallworth, who will participate with her groundbreaking project Collisions. A work of stunning visuals and powerful narrative, Collisions tells the story of Aboriginal elder Nyarri Nyarri Morgan who lived as 1000 generations before him in the remote Pilbara desert of Western Australia-- until his life was dramatically impacted by a collision with the extreme edge of Western science and technology. Wallworth is an acclaimed Australian artist and documentary filmmaker known for producing immersive artworks that provoke a profound emotional response. She is ideally positioned to explore the storytelling potential of VR, and sees the new form as the perfect vehicle for Nyarri to communicate his story. Wallworth's immersive installations and films have been shown at the World Economic Forum (Davos), Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, the Smithsonian, Adelaide Biennial, Brighton Festival, Vienna Festival, London Film Festival, Sydney Film Festival, Adelaide Film Festival and Margaret Mead Film Festival, among others. Collisions is produced by Sundance Film Festival alumnus Nicole Newnham and Academy Award-nominated film producer Cori Shepherd Stern.

But hey we are pay to play bloggers so check out what VR evangelist Lil Wayne had to say after getting some hands on time with Google Cardboard Plastic. 

Sources at VrAndCats.com  have told us Lil Wayne is trying hard to get out of his deal with Samsung and is actually said to be trying his hardest to be in commercials for Google Cardboard Plastic now that Google has a product that can withstand the harsh conditions of Champaign. Lil Wayne had previously been enamored by the anti-champagne tech Samsung had developed.

Even though Google respects Mr. Wayne, sources at VrAndCats.com say that Google is looking to upstart rapper Drake as a potential celebrity endorser. Drake's recent song about a cell phone has gotten the educated Canadian mad respect in the undergrown hip hop community. One may remember Drake due to his struggle being real and thus being the inspiration to the global television hit Wheels Ontario.

From EVR to Eve: Valkyrie! CCP made a killer VR game.

Back at E3 2013 CCP's EVR demo left me awestruck and totally a VR fanboy. Oculus Rift Review Round UP

March 28th has been filled with tons of news about VR. Since today is when Oculus Rift consumer Preorders would be arriving much media coverage has been put out today.

Now here is the wrap up for the day.

You’ll find yourself instinctively flinching away from objects as they fly at your face or doing a double-take when you see something surprising in the corner of your eye.
